A Strong Partner

Dr. Jed N. Snyder, Pastor, Augusta Street Church

In many parts of the world oxen are still used to pull carts.  Bananas, yucca, chickens, pigs and numerous other items are loaded in with the people for their tiring treks over dusty roads and across streams.  I wondered how the oxen were trained to work together learning to carry the yoke and pull the wooden carts. Once while visiting in Bolivia, South America I was shown what is done.  Without going into detail, primarily the process is to take an older stronger ox and place a younger untrained animal with it.  The larger, older animal carries the major burden and teaches the younger animal what its responsibility will be. While only a small minority of us may be familiar with oxen and how they are trained, the guiding principle is clear.

Jesus used this illustration to help us grasp what he is to those who desire him to walk with them in their lives.

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30

Jesus will always be the strong partner.  He will always carry the heavier part of the load.  He will constantly train us for the task.  With him by our side our inner being, our soul and spirit will be resting. His peace will smooth out the rough places, his presence will calm us as life’s storm vent their rage.  His gentle strength will encourage and uplift us in our need.  He will be our strong partner.

Happy partnering with the strong, gentle yoke-bearer.
